I used to do embroidery and now I'm interested in taking it up again and just making random things to decorate my apartment with. Where can I find a hobby shop to buy supplies and get ideas from? I live in Orange County, CA, and doing a Google search hasn't really helped. Walmart and Target doing carry these supplies either. You really should go for a degree, and learn to sew. You have to rise through the ranks by working for other companies before starting your own. If you really want to try this without a degree, buy a good, fancy sewing machine with all the features, and try taking sewing classes at a local community center or something. Learn about the types of fabrics, threads, etc. Once you can actually make the clothes you design, create a few pieces as a portfolio. Then, you have to borrow money, so you can employ people to help you out. Rent a small shop to start with, but somewhere a lot of people will pass by it, so you get noticed.
