How can I clean a framed needlework?
Q. I have a framed crewel needlework that my mother stitched for me years ago. It is dark from dust, grime, and natural gas heat. I want to get it cleaned, but I don't know where to take it. I'm assuming it will have to come out of the frame, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions, please?

A. Yes! Go to www.heloise.com and ask your question. I know she has covered this in her column before. If this answer isn't on her website, you can always write to have her answer the question in her column again. If you want to have it professionally cleaned, phone your dry cleaner and ask if they handle these things. If not, they would probably know who does in your area.

what different techniques do you use to stop fraying while needlework?
Q. I mainly use clear nail polish (something my mother showed me) but it is not working. I bought a bottle can't remeber the name of it that looks like a nail polish bottle that I bought at a craft store and that isn't working very good either. What techniques do you use. i was thinking about pulling out my sewing machine and bate stitching the edges has anyone tried that and does it work
Asked by kellykat60409 - Sun Aug 26 00:16:18 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. the best method would be to sew it. Finish the edges as you would finish it for display. some people use masking tape to hold the edges together. However, masking tape does dry out and fall off. Artist (or painters) masking tape might be a solution - it is blue and can be found in the hardware departments. another solution would be to backstich it all the way around - over 2 threads and up through the middle of the stitch just made.

Q. I got a baby duck with birhdate and name to be cross stitched on to fabric. How do you trace or transfer the duck picture to the cloth? Thank you.

A. There might be something a little more "up to date" these days, but I usually just use plain carbon paper like they used to make typewritten copies of documents. Just go slowly and lightly. The pattern hand washed out later after stitching. I hope you can find something that works!

Are knitting, cross stitch, crochet and similar needlework forgotten?
Q. I was just wondering how many people are still doing any of them. Especially younger generations. Personally I love crochet and I am doing it since I was 10,11. It relaxes me and I always have some ready for those people that I realy appreciate and want to give a special present. A. I would say that while some of the needle arts are still in vogue and going strong, some of them are becomming forgotten. Knitting, Crochet and Cross Stitch are all popluar and in little danger of becomming extinct. There are some other ones though, like making Bobbin Lace, Tatting or just other needle work stitches that fall into this category. I do embroider...I am self taught and there are some excellent guides put out by companies like DMC and such, that teaches how to make the different stitches. Keep in mind that the Cross Stitch will be in these books because, they are one stitch in the rich library of Embroidery stitches. They are not hard to learn, you just have to take the time to puzzle them out. I find that embroidery is… [cont.]

Does anyone know where I can find a "free" needlework?
Q. of the Marine Corps Emblem. My Grand-daughter is marrying a "once a marine, always a Marine". I have searched and from what I have gone through cannot find one although they advertise as "free". I am on a very limited income and would like to find a free one or could someone who has it e-mail me the instructions and the threads needed. I would be very grateful for information to find it and download or if someone could send one to me.
Asked by GG - Thu Mar 12 14:53:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. The best one I've seen is a cross-stitch pattern that sells for $4.95 (for download) plus $2 more for shipping. Considering how complex that emblem is, that's a real deal. Of course, you'll want to add his name with his retirement rank and his dates of enlistment (or commissioning) and retirement.

How do I find an old pattern from McCall's Needlework and Crafts, 1971-1972? Leaflet 781-NB.ninitonti@aol.co?
Q. it's a metallic-synthetic yarn crocheted evening gown.
Asked by ninitonti - Mon Jan 5 14:25:06 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 1) Try eBay. If you don't find it at first, keep checking. 2) Find as many craft-related forums as you can, and post your question in each of them. Eventually you'll probably run across someone who has a copy. 3) Google phrases like "mccalls vintage patterns" or "mccalls out of print patterns". You'll probably find a lot of online stores that specialize in that stuff. Email the owners and ask if they keep a "wish list" for customers like you. I hope one of these suggestions will pay off for you.

What is the best way to get wrinkles out of cross-stitched material?
Q. I have finished a cross-stitch pattern but there are many wrinkles in it. I have heard that it isn't good to iron this material after you have done the needlework. Does anyone know the proper way to get the wrinkles out?
Asked by highjinx777 - Fri Dec 22 23:00:05 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. To get wrinkles out of a finished item, here's what you do. Put a thick towel on your ironing board (one layer only). Lay your item face down on the towel. Lightly mist with water. Press out the wrinkles using a temperature approbate for the material. NEVER press on the front and never press it on any surface except a towel !!! When you use this procedure, you won't crush down the stiching you have done.

What sewing machine to buy for hemming pants?
Q. I just want to buy a simple basic sewing machine under $100 to hem my pants. I don't need it to do any fancy needlework. All I need is to hem my pant legs. Can anyone recommend me any brands? Thanks alot!
Asked by Snoopyfan - Thu Dec 18 19:16:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you're going to hem pants with a straight stitched-through hem (like jeans), any decent straight stitcher will do. I typically find old Singer 99s and 15s around for $0-20 that just need cleaning, oil and a new needle. If you want to do a more professional looking hem, such as is used on dress pants, you want a machine with a "blind hem stitch" (and ask for it to be demonstrated for you). Or you're going to learn to hem by hand... takes very little time and costs you a packet of hand sewing machine needles -- less than $1. With a budget of $100, you're either going to be going for a used machine or a new one that is not going to last long or be repairable.
